While out today I heard this conversation (between an american and an english lady) about a fountain which was uncovered.
US chap: That would never be allowed in the US, someone could fall in and hurt themselves
UK lady: In the UK we just don’t fall in.
Several years back, while on holiday in Ireland, I got chatting to someone who mentioned he’d been to visit Dun Aengus, a prehistoric hill-fort perched on a c.300′ cliff on Inishmore, the largest of the three Aran Islands. I was planning on going there myself a few days later, so I asked him what it was like.
He said he’d been surprised by the complete lack of railings, and had mentioned this to one of the locals, who had replied “Yeah, it’s only foreigners who ever fall over – the rest of us are too sensible”.
At the end of an evening – this made me laugh! thanks 🙂
Beautiful.
